Puffin Workshop

Join Wildlife Photographer Jeremy Neipp on an Unforgettable 5 Day Excursion to the Island of Runde. Runde is home to the largest Population of Nesting Atlantic Puffins south of the Arctic circle, situated in Norway. Not only Puffin, but Northern Gannet, Razorbill, and a plethora of other seabirds call this island their home as well, making for some amazing memories and exciting encounters.

Birds on Runde are very familiar with human interaction, allowing for incredibly close encounters that can be difficult to find elsewhere. With Jeremy’s experience, he’ll help you locate the ideal spots to get these close encounters with scenic backdrops and angles at the right times of day. Due to the ease of subject interaction, you’ll get plenty of time to work with Jeremy 1 on 1 in real-time to improve your photography and work on post-processing back at the lodge if you choose.

 Itinerary

Day 1:

  • After Traveling, we will all meet up at the lodge on the island of Runde and gather over dinner.

  • Jeremy will spend a portion of the evening going over best camera settings, techniques, and knowledge for photographing wildlife on the island of Runde.

Day 2:

  • After getting a good night's rest, we’ll eat some Breakfast (or just lunch for anyone who sleeps in) and head up the island’s mountain towards the Gannet cliffs a little after noon. We’ll work to capture some unique creative photos at this ledge as we prepare for our evening with the Puffins.

  • Before the Puffins make their way to the island for the evening, we’ll prepare ourselves at some of the best locations to capture these photos. As they come in for the evening, you’ll experience a spectacle unlike anything else you’ve likely seen, and get within feet of the Puffins you are hoping to photograph.

Day 3-4:

  • We’ll repeat the cycle of sleeping in throughout the mornings (the sun sets very late this far north), and hiking up the island later in the afternoon to catch the Puffins coming in. Before we set out in the mornings, we’ll have a time for reflection on techniques and strategy to work through what we can do to improve all our images. Because we’ll be spending 3 days photographing, you’ll improve each day on the images you took.

  • Depending on the best photo options and group preferences, we’ll also be looking to photograph Razorbill, Guillemot, and Skua before the Puffins come in each evening.

  • On the morning of Day 4, Jeremy will take out a group of anyone who is looking to visit the visitors center on the island. It’s a fascinating place to learn more about all the seabirds that call Runde their home.

Day 5:

  • By this day, we’re hoping for some award-winning images of Puffins and other seabirds for you to take home and show off! You’ll be guaranteed to walk away with images that you love, and over a final breakfast together as a group, we’ll review our favorites with one another and say our farewells before departing.

Also happy to answer any questions! The goal is to give a personal touch throughout your whole experience. Don’t hesitate to reach out.

Why Puffins at Runde?

  • What makes Runde special compared to most Puffin places is that many Puffin islands are only accessed by ferry, making your visit times with them short, and preventing you from being there at sunset (peak photography hours)

  • The dramatic landscape cliffs on Runde are much more aesthetic than the ones typically found on most islands, giving you more opportunities for incredible scenic shots with Puffins and not just good close ups

  • Runde has the largest concentration of Atlantic Puffin south of the arctic circle, making it the most abundant place to photograph Puffins that is accessible to the general public
